What UK Businesses Need To Know
Manchester Central is different from every other venue in this guide. ExCeL, the NEC, and the SEC are purpose-built exhibition centres, designed from the ground up to move freight, hang rigging, and fill enormous floor plates with stands. Manchester Central, on the other hand, is a Grade II* listed former railway station built in 1880 and converted into an exhibition and conference venue in the 1980s. It’s been significantly updated since.
That heritage is both its strongest asset and its primary constraint. The main hall is a single column-free space under a barrel-vaulted arched roof 27 metres at the ridge. This makes it one of the most visually striking exhibition environments in the UK outside of Olympia’s Grand Hall. It is also not a blank box: the building creates a specific atmosphere that works very well for certain events and less well for others.
The Venue Layout

Manchester Central has two exhibition spaces and a significant conference component.
The Main Hall
Floor area is approximately 10,000 sq m. That’s significantly smaller than ExCeL’s halls or the NEC’s 20-hall complex. The hall is single-level, column-free, with ground-level loading access directly from the surrounding dock road. The arched roof runs the full length of the hall and the glass panels in the original ironwork let in natural light at the apex.
Ceiling height at the ridge is around 27 metres, but the standard useable height for stand builds is considerably lower. The relevant number here is the height at which rigging points are available and where structural sign-off applies. For most events at Manchester Central, the working ceiling height for space-only stands is in the 6–8 metre range. Confirm your event’s specific limit in the exhibitor manual.
The Exchange Hall
Manchester Central also has a second exhibition space: the Exchange Hall. It measures approximately 1,800 sq m. It suits mid-size shows and is sometimes used alongside the main hall for combined events. Service ducts in the Exchange Hall floor provide power and data floorboxes at fixed intervals; check duct locations against your stand position on the floorplan.
Conference And Meeting Rooms
Manchester Central has a significant conference component: there are multiple meeting rooms ranging from small boardroom-size to rooms handling several hundred delegates. Many events use the main hall as the exhibition floor alongside the conference rooms for seminars and keynotes. The overall layout suits this combination well.
What Manchester Central Is Best For

Manchester Central is not the right venue for a show that needs 50,000 sq m of floor space or heavy machinery on display. It is the right venue for:
- Mid-sized B2B trade shows where the North West buyer catchment is the target market.
- Events that combine a show floor with a significant conference programme as the venue layout supports both simultaneously.
- Shows where environment matters since the building’s character is an asset for premium consumer events, fashion, food and drink, and design-sector events where a generic exhibition hall would feel like a downgrade
- City-centre accessibility for events where visitors are commuting in from Manchester, Salford, and across Greater Manchester; having the venue in the city centre (rather than at an out-of-town campus) increases attendance.
The trade-off: if your show needs large-vehicle access at scale, the kind of logistics infrastructure that the NEC offers, or more than ~10,000 sq m of continuous floor space, Manchester Central is not the right fit.
The Build Process At Manchester Central
Move-in
Move-in is managed through the event organiser. You receive a move-in slot and dock access details in the exhibitor manual. The loading dock is accessed from Lower Mosley Street on the south side of the building.
Key Practicalities:
- Access road: Lower Mosley Street is a city-centre road, not a purpose-built dock road. It is not wide enough for articulated lorries without coordination. For larger vehicle deliveries, your event organiser will specify the approach and timing. Van-based deliveries and smaller vehicles are more straightforward.
- Loading doors: Reported dimensions are 4.4m wide by 4.2m high (confirm in your event exhibitor manual). Check your vehicle and any large exhibit dimensions before finalising your logistics plan.
- Ground-level access: The main hall is at ground level with direct level access from the dock. No ramps, no goods lifts for most stand configurations.
- Contractor passes: As at all venues, register your crew in advance through the event organiser’s system.
- CDM requirements: The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 apply to all exhibition stand construction. Most show organisers also require a risk assessment and method statement for stands over 30 sq m or with structures above 2.5 metres. Check your exhibitor manual for the specific threshold. The listed building status means additional care is required around what touches the building fabric; all stand structures must be freestanding.
- Service ordering: Power, rigging, internet, and furniture must be ordered through official portals in advance, typically with a 4–5 week lead time. Late orders incur surcharges. Check the cut-off dates in your exhibitor manual.
Stand Height
The maximum stand build height at Manchester Central sits around 4m, but confirm this in your event exhibitor manual. This is separate from the ceiling height, where the arched roof peaks at 27m at the ridge.
Rigging
Rigging from the historic roof structure is managed through approved contractors. Knight Rigging Services is the official rigging contractor at Manchester Central. The ironwork is protected, and nothing is fixed to the original building fabric. The visual impact of suspended branding in the main hall against the arched roof can be strong, but rigging costs and lead times apply as at all venues. Book early.
Indicative Knight Rigging ratesbased on 2018 pricing are around £85 for a single suspension point (500 kg capacity), £135 for a motor hoist point, and £225 to hang a 6m banner. A 20% surcharge applies to late orders.
Build Days
Event build windows at Manchester Central are typically tighter than at the NEC or ExCeL, reflecting the smaller scale of most shows. One to two days is common for space-only builds.
Confirm the specific window in your exhibitor manual.
Getting To Manchester Central

Location
Manchester Central sits in the city centre, immediately south of the Deansgate area. The address is Windmill Street, off Lower Mosley Street, a few minutes’ walk from Deansgate.
By Public Transport
- Metrolink: Deansgate-Castlefield tram stop is a 5-minute walk. The Metrolink network connects to Piccadilly, Victoria, Salford Quays, MediaCity, and across Greater Manchester.
- Rail: Manchester Piccadilly is approximately 20 minutes on foot or 10 minutes on the Metrolink. Manchester Victoria is around 25 minutes on foot or via Metrolink. Both stations serve intercity routes.
- From London: Manchester Piccadilly is approximately 2 hours from London Euston on Avanti West Coast.
For events where most of your visitors are commuting within Greater Manchester, city-centre location is a genuine advantage. The Metrolink and rail access means visitors can attend without driving, which increases the viability of half-day attendance.
By Road
Manchester Central is in the city centre and is not directly motorway-adjacent. The practical approaches for build vehicles are as follows:
- From the M62 (east/west): M62 to M60, then M60 to A57(M) into the city centre.
- From the M6 (north/south): M6 to M63/M60, then into the city centre.
Parking: There is an NCP multi-storey car park directly below Manchester Central, open 24 hours. Check the NCP website for current space availability and height restrictions before bringing a van or high-roof vehicle. This car park is not owned by the venue. Several other multi-storey car parks are within a few minutes’ walk, including Great Northern immediately adjacent to the venue. For build crew personal vehicles over a multi-day build, budget for city-centre parking rates. The Metrolink is usually the cheaper option for crew without materials.
On-site Services
Manchester Central’s exhibitor services are provided through official contractors. Key points:
- Wi-Fi: Complimentary Wi-Fi is available to all exhibitors throughout the venue and the speeds have been upgraded in recent years. If you need guaranteed bandwidth for demos or live streams, dedicated wired Ethernet connections are available and you should place your order approximately 5 weeks before the event. A fixed-line connection for the show typically costs around £200.
- Catering: Manchester Central Catering is the tied caterer for all food and drink. Outside food and drink brought onto stands incurs corkage charges. If you are planning any hospitality on your stand like coffees, refreshments, or a hosted bar, it needs to go through venue catering.
- Furniture: No stand furniture is supplied by the venue. All tables, chairs, and display items must be ordered through the event organiser’s portal or a stand contractor. A basic package (table and two chairs) is typically available for around £150.

Manchester Central Versus The NEC: Which Is Right For Your Show?

Both Manchester Central and the NEC are in the north of England and serve broadly similar geographies. The decision usually comes down to three things:
Scale: If your show needs more than ~10,000 sq m, Manchester Central is not an option. The NEC has 20 halls.
Visitor profile: The NEC draws nationally, and it’s nearby motorway junction makes it accessible from every UK region. Manchester Central draws primarily from the North West and to a lesser extent from Yorkshire, the Midlands, and Scotland. For a show targeting the North West market specifically, Manchester Central’s city-centre location often produces better attendance than a Birmingham-based alternative. For a show targeting the whole of the UK, the NEC’s geography is superior.
Environment: The NEC is functional and modern. Manchester Central is atmospheric and distinctive. For certain sectors like premium consumer, food and drink, fashion, creative industries, the building enhances the event in a way a modern shed does not.
